Let’s face it though, unless you are a prepper, it’s doubtful that you would even know about it. While this is a government sponsored event, and they do provide some good information for those that have little to no preparedness plans, they don’t exactly make a point of advertising it.
Do I sound just a little lack-luster about this whole thing this year? In years past I’ve always tried to promote EP week as best I can. As time goes by though, I realize that while the websites and information are there, there is a lack of promotion on the part of their creators. That leaves it up to preppers.
Now, I know that all the published information and tips on the website are truly basic in nature, one has to realize that it isn’t meant for us preppers. Anyone who has been a prepper for at least a few months probably has all that stuff done long ago. However, as preppers, this is still a great way to promote preparedness to those that have no plans whatsoever.
What can we do as preppers to get the word out? First of all, share the graphics on social media. Don’t worry too much about OPSEC, this is after all publicly available information provided by no other than the federal government. While that may not be a big deal for us folks, it does offer a sense of legitimacy to the unprepared. Let’s face it, making people aware that life has a way of throwing curveballs isn’t a bad thing.
In addition to the general EP Week graphics, there are also more specific articles on the government website. If you know someone who has been affected by floods for example, try sharing a link to the flood specific info page like this:
While you’re at it, go ahead and tag those friends you are targeting, just to make sure they get the hint.
As for ourselves, we can use EP Week as a reminder to go check our gear and go back over the basics. We so often get caught up in advanced preparedness, that we can forget about the little stuff. What better time to change out some clothing in our bug out bags, check flashlight and radio batteries, or any other regular task we SHOULD be doing.
In the end, promoting EP week, seems to be on us, so let’s get out there and do it.
